All day they tramped around town: the movie star with slicked-back hair and the bespectacled musician who had once been famous. The star was Saturday Night Fever and Grease actor John Travolta—still, in the summer of 1980, a disco princeling hotter than a thousand raging suns. The musician, and Travolta's guide around Los Angeles that long, sweltering afternoon, was Ray Manzarek of The Doors.

SAN FRANCISCO – The end is near for a bitter legal dispute between the three surviving members of The Doors now that the California Supreme Court has refused to take up their case.

Keyboardist Ray Manzarek and guitarist Robby Krieger are on the hook for more than $5 million after they were found by lower courts to have improperly invoked The Doors’ name and images during a 2003 concert tour.

Ray Manzarek, who died yesterday at the age of 74, had a voice as rich and stentorian as that of Jim Morrison, the front man of the band they founded in 1965, the Doors. But Manzarek put his voice to work as a raconteur rather than as a singer.

One of The Doors’ most famous classic rock songs is “People Are Strange.” The Doors’ Ray Manzarek recalled Jim Morrison saw something one time when he got up early in the morning. Subsequently, he wrote “People Are Strange.”
